Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram – in fact all social media – pretend to connect people. But of course, they just connect accounts. So, what is this worth? Just have a look at your own LinkedIn connections: probably ever more connections, and ever less interactions.
As with all things, whether they are material or immaterial, value is inversely proportional to availability. As connections increase exponentially, no doubt that value must be decreasing. It’s simple market laws.
So which connections really create value today? Probably those that you can’t duplicate or automatize easily. In a world of bots and virtual relations, truly human interaction will be the absolute winner. Make a call, meet physically, say hello and shake hands at a fair, or even write a letter… all this represents tremendous, increasing value.
Social media ultimately will teach us the value of true relations – hopefully.
